Flannel, my friends, has made a comeback. What once was only associated with Paul Bunyan, railroad workers and the grunge music era has now made its way back into popular society, acceptable for all to wear. What started as a cheap fabric that was thick and warm is now a staple in closets from east to west.
Here are six reasons why flannel is everybody’s new best friend and why it should be in your closet this winter season.
1. Dress it up & dress it down
Flannel is the perfect piece to throw on when you are rushing out the door to complete a few weekend errands and don’t want to put a lot effort into put together look. Flannel is also a fashion statement women and men both won’t let go of. Wear a flannel button down with leggings and converse for errands — or pair it with heels, jeans and a chunky necklace for stopping by a bar with friends.
2. The bigger, the better
Sure, fitted plaid flannel shirts are great and sophisticated, but so are their oversized counterparts. Flannel is comfy and cozy and there is nothing like wearing an oversized shirt and knowing that it is actually in style! An oversized flannel top paired with these Jade leggings is the perfect casual, but cute look for anyone this winter.
3. Add that pop of color
Flannel comes in virtually every color or pattern that you could wish for. A large plaid pattern continues to be a favorite, but even that has unlimited numbers of color combinations, allowing you to interpret your own style into every flannel you own.
4. Everyone’s invited (to wear it)
The beauty of flannel is that it is incredibly universal. It is not designated for one sex; in fact, flannel is equally as popular with men as it is with women (seeing as it started in menswear). Feel free to grab your boyfriend’s flannel to mix up your look!
5. What goes around comes around
Remember how tying a sweatshirt around your waist was the “thing” to do? Well, get ready to start tying again, because it is once again acceptable to tie a flannel (maybe not a sweatshirt) around your waist! Check out how Christine Andrew pulls off the look on her blog, Hello Fashion.
6. Layers, layers, & more layers
Layering with flannel is trendy and easy. Throw on a leather or jean jacket with a big circle scarf for a more complete and cozy look this winter. For a more put-together look, choose a fitted flannel shirt and match it with a cable knit sweater on top! Pairing flannel with cut-off jean shorts on a nice spring day is another fun way to add a little spunk to your look. Check out the flawless combination (above) from Cupcakes and Cashmere.
Incorporate these tips and you’ll be ready to rock your flannel day or night, all year ’round. (Watch out — its warmth and comfort can become addicting!) How do you best rock this winter’s best trend?
