Q&A with a Stylish Working Mom

And how you can be one, too.

Stylish. Working. Mother.

Those three words put together in the same sentence feels like quite the achievement, right? Take care of your family. Check. Work full-time. Check. And be stylish?  Yes, you can check that, too.  We sat down with Angela Primavera, vice president and general manager for Lee Female Merchandising, to talk about how she balances being a mom and a successful businesswoman.

In addition to overseeing the entire female side of the business at Lee, Angela keeps busy at home with a 6-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son. Angela shares her tips on getting her family ready in the morning and why lipstick and heels are put on right before you step into the office.

Do you have any tips for getting everyone (and yourself!) ready in the morning?

Have a game plan! Preparation for me is crucial. On the weekends, I pick out my kids’ clothes for the entire week.  Then they get to choose which outfit they wear on what day.  The night before, I pack their lunches and try to get their breakfasts ready as much as possible. They love oatmeal — all flavors. I also get up and ready before I wake them. I usually jump out of bed around 5:45 a.m., so that gives me plenty of time to shower and get ready before I focus on them.

As a working mom, how do you make time for yourself?

I try and take the moments when I have them. I’m lucky that my children still nap, so I get some down time on the weekends.  One of my favorite things to do is shop online, which luckily coincides with my job!

What are some key items in your wardrobe?

Don’t focus on every single trend out there. Get to know your body and what will work best on you.  And specifically look for trends that will transition to multiple seasons.

My wardrobe begins with jeans, whether it’s a skinny or flare. I’ll add a crisp white shirt, and then I layer in accessory pieces. I have quite a few of jackets in a variety of colors. I typically wear heels at work, so I love to buy fun ones to dress up my outfit.

How do you transition from day to night?

For me, it’s more of a transition from the morning routine to work.  I need to be mobile, so I always slip on flats in the morning. Usually one of us will have left something we need for work or school, so I need to be able to run up the stairs (sometimes more than once)!

I also wait to put my lipstick on until after I’ve dropped my kids off at school. I want to be able to kiss them goodbye without staining their cheeks!

What’s your weekend wardrobe when you’re home with your family?

Comfortable pieces. My go-to look lately has been an embellished sweatshirt and boyfriend jeans. I also wear more flats on the weekends. Toms, colorful sneakers and ballet flats are all in rotation.

What is one accessory you could never leave home without?

My wedding ring, of course! But really I love to invest in classic pieces. A gold watch, gold stud earrings, basically pieces that go with just about everything.  I have a gold starburst necklace that I wear quite a bit.

Who are your favorite stylish celebrity moms?

Jessica Alba and Gwen Stefani have such great style. I love just about everything that Jessica wears and Gwen has such a cool, rocker look.

Any other advice for working moms?

Truly learn what looks best on your body type, and then shop online! It saves me a ton of time, and allows me to spend more time with my family.

Also, don’t just plan your kids’ outfits the night before, but plan your own. It will make your morning go much smoother!
