Summer is coming to a close, and the season of golden-hued leaves, pumpkin spice lattes and light jackets is just around the corner.

But before you trade in your tank tops for sweaters and load up your Pinterest board with pumpkin-inspired recipes, seize these last days of summer. Here are some ideas to help you carpe that late-summer diem.


With Your Adult Friends: Have a Six Pack Swap

We are in a microbrewery boom with more varieties of beer to choose from than there are shades of denim. Summer is almost over, and there are still countless summer brews you have yet to try. Here’s an idea to help you sample six without buying 36: Invite your friends over and tell them to bring a six-pack of their favorite summer beer. Then, swap! With Your Family: Make Homemade Slushies

The slushie: A delicious treat that screams “summer.” Give a sweet sendoff to the season by making them at home! This is a fun way to get the kids in the kitchen. Get inspired by these recipes, or get inventive and create your own! (BONUS TIP: Get dad in a pair of stain-resistant pants before slurping.)

With the Neighborhood: Host a Back-to-School Bash

Start the school year with a bang and host a back-to-school bash for your neighborhood and friends. It’s a great way to get the kids excited about that first day, and also a way for the adults to celebrate their childrens‘ progression. (That first day can be a little emotional for the parents, too.) Include a goodie bag with back-to-school supplies and set up a fun DIY photo booth with back-to-school themed props. With Friends & Family (All Ages): Have a Summer Movie Marathon

Ah lazy summer days — we will miss you. There’s nothing quite like a hot summer day with an empty agenda. Enjoy your last days of summer relaxation — get comfortable with a summer movie marathon. Even better: Set up a projector screen in your backyard to watch them outside! (TIP: Check your library — sometimes you can “check out” a projector.) Check with your local swimming pool to see if they host an event like this, and let your four-legged friend end the dog days of summer with lots of tail-wagging fun.

With Your Fine Self: Prepare Your Closet for Fall

Go through your summer clothes carefully. Are there items you didn’t wear all season? Or wore once and didn’t love it? Donate these so you’ll be one step ahead for next summer. Plus, detoxing your closet will help you make room for those light transitional pieces like booties and cardigans that you’ll wear as soon as the temperatures start to dip.
