Four Beers For Summer (Plus Two Kansas City Favorites)


Being a beer lover can be a lot like being a denim lover this time of year. The summer heat makes even the frostiest of cold ones seem a little heavy and can really bog you down. But just like a perfect fitting pair of jeans, the right beer can be the perfect touch for a backyard BBQ or trip to the ballpark. And with great micro-breweries raising the bar every day, there’s something new to try every season.  So here at Lee we put together a list of great summer beers that have tons of personality and won’t leave you feeling weighed down.

Four Summer Beers with Personality

New Belgium Summer Helles

The Fort Collins-based brewery has been tweaking and refreshing traditional Belgian style recipes for the past couple of decades, and this Sumer Helles is one of their finest creations. With a rich gold color and a light body, this beer has just enough character and kick to keep it interesting and refreshing.

Deschutes Twilight Summer Ale

Overlooking the Deschutes River in Bend, Oregon, this brewery offers up a great summer refresher for those hop-lovers in the crowd. This session style Pale Ale offers bright citrus flavors to compliment the familiar hoppy bitterness, making it a perfectly balanced beer for your back yard cookouts.

Mother’s Brewing Company Sandy

This “hopped-up wheat” hails from just down the road in Springfield, MO. The playful combination of Belgian Witbier and American Pale Ale makes for a complex and yet crisply refreshing summer staple. Sandy is easy drinking and will quickly become a summer time go-to.

Samuel Adams Porch Rocker

The Boston-based brewery bridges the gap between small microbreweries and the more familiar large brewers we all know and love. This summer edition is noteworthy for its distinctive, tangy lemon flavor. Paired with the crisp Helles-style flavor, this beer truly is destined for the porch!

Bonus Round: Lee Hometown Flavors

Now, for your KC A-listers this summer! While a lot of Boulevard Brewery’s year-round and seasonal offerings are equally delicious throughout the summer, let’s highlight two that really shine in the heat.

KC Pils

Designed to celebrate the once-ubiquitous American Pilsner, this beer is a true classic. Full of that malty aroma and refreshing hop character, the KC Pils should be in everyone’s fridge this summer and beyond. And if you need any more convincing, Boulevard now donates 10% of its revenue from KC Pils sales to Kansas City charities. Tastes good and does good!

Free State Ad Astra Ale

Just down the road from Kansas City is another of our local grown favorites – Free State Brewing Company. Brewed in Lawrence, the Ad Astra Ale is “the first Ale brewed in Kansas since the pioneering days,” and it has been a favorite ever since. And while it isn’t necessarily a summer-specific beer, it has a nicely balanced flavor that stems from a wide variety of malts and just enough hops. It’s good enough that we’re enjoying it year-round!
